The Passion Crisis

What a better way to start off the blog than talking about the word that is usually most synonymous with creativity and art…

So often I hear about it, passion. Some say that passion is something that everyone finds and goes for, since it will make you happy, and make your life better, and will bring you closer to your dreams. Others say that going for your passion is a waste of time, because, who gets paid to go clothes shopping? Many people argue over the problem of whether or not your passion should be something you focus on striving to become your career, but I believe that when it comes to this idea we are asking the wrong question, to each other, and to ourselves.

You see, I believe that the question is not whether or not one should go for their passion, but to ask an even more basic question.

  1. What even is a passion?

Many people believe that a passion is something that you love to do, or something you overall enjoy. But that is only half of the equation of what makes up for a passion. There are a lot of things that I love, and a lot of things that I enjoy, but there are very few things that I would be willing to sacrifice my well being, large amounts of time, and my energy committing to every day. Writing just so happens to be one of those things. I love to do it every single day of my life, and love to try to get better at it. Sometimes, in order to do it, I have to sacrifice things that I wouldn’t do for my other things that I enjoy. Currently, I am staying up very, very late to write this, and will probably be tired in the morning for work, and I don’t think I would do this for an NBA basketball game.

A passion is something you would be willing to make a sacrifice for that truly costs you, without knowing if that payment of sacrifice would end up paying off the way you want to. I believe that many people think that because you are going for your passion, something you love, that it automatically becomes a win-win situation. Don’t get me wrong, working hard at your passion is a lot more fulfilling than working hard at a career, but it is NOT a win-win ALL THE TIME. In fact, going for your passion will end up being more frustrating in it’s pursuit than your original career…and that’s kind of the point. Do you love your passion enough to be frustrated, make no results and progress after many attempts, and still keep going?

That is the question you need to answer, and once you answer it, you are more on track to a fulfilled life than most people in their entire lives! Good luck.
